Anwar Ibrahim In Bad Shape

Anwar Ibrahim in bad shape
About two weeks ago, Anwar Ibrahim’s solicitor, Sankara Nair, wrote to the Home Ministry requesting that Anwar be admitted into hospital. The Prime Minister, Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, who is also the Home Minister, then instructed the Health Ministry to conduct an examination on Anwar to determine how serious his condition is and whether it warrants admission into hospital.

On Tuesday, 30 December 2003, Dr Jayaindran Sinnadurai, the government doctor assigned to Anwar, went to the Sungai Buloh Prison to examine Anwar. Dr Jayaindran was actually quite shocked to discover that Anwar was in such a bad shape and was suffering excruciating pain.

That same morning, Dr Jayaindran reported his findings to the Deputy Health Minister since the Health Minister was on an overseas trip. The Deputy Health Minister, in turn, phoned the Prime Minister but what he reported to Abdullah was that Anwar was fine and in the best of health. Anwar, said the Deputy Minister of Health, was faking and not at all sick. This was what Dr Jayaindran told him but whether the Deputy Heath Minister too is a party attempting to mislead the Prime Minister can only be speculated upon.

It is no secret, however, that the Deputy Health Minister does not like Anwar one bit and would like to see him rot in jail. He would be the last one who would want to see Anwar admitted into hospital. And neither is Dr Jayaindran a fan of Anwar either considering Anwar had questioned his credentials. Dr Jayaindran is definitely no spine specialist and is not qualified to examine Anwar or come out with any prognosis on Anwar’s spinal injury. For him to now admit Anwar is sick enough to be admitted into hospital would bring into question the conflicting statements he has been making all this while.

All along the government had claimed Anwar was fine and was being accorded the best medical facilities in the country, complete with an air-conditioned gymnasium and so on. And this is what the Malaysian Parliament reported to the IPU in its letter to them in September last year. To now admit Anwar into hospital would be an admission they had misled the world all this while.

For further consideration is Anwar’s bail application that has yet been decided by the court. One of the main arguments to support this application is the fact Anwar requires urgent medical treatment, a point the prosecution has disputed. How could they now oppose bail on grounds that Anwar is not really that sick as claimed when they now have to admit him into hospital? It would be safer for all, therefore, if Anwar remains in prison rather than be sent to hospital, which would certainly tear to pieces the Malaysian Parliament’s letter to the IPU and the prosecution’s objection to bail.

Dr Jayaindran should be pulled off Anwar’s case and another government doctor more qualified to treat spinal injuries should be appointed to attend to Anwar instead. The Prime Minister should then instruct this new doctor to report his findings direct to him rather than through a “middleman”, especially one who is Anwar’s sworn enemy.

Anwar is in bad shape and the Prime Minister had better believe it. Pain is nature’s way of telling you something is wrong. And the fact that Anwar is in excruciating pain means that nature is telling him he is in a serious condition. Abdullah is attempting to build up his reputation as a fair and just man, a man who tolerates no hanky-panky, corruption included. If he mishandles Anwar’s case, this one disaster can destroy all hopes of impressing the world he is different and better than his predecessor. Anwar was Dr Mahathir’s downfall, the beginning of the end for him. It may have taken five years but, finally, Dr Mahathir had to bail out with his tail between his legs, not as a conquering hero he would like to be remembered as. Abdullah must not take this same route Dr Mahathir did. Abdullah cannot afford to ignore the critical state of Anwar’s health only to find that he mis-stepped and now has to pay the price.

Even if Abdullah feels he can handle the political fallout, there is still compassion and decency to consider. Anwar is sick and needs to be hospitalised. Is it too much to ask that Anwar be given fair treatment? He is not asking for special treatment. Even common criminals would be given fair medical treatment if they deserve it. And Anwar is certainly far more than just a common criminal. Even Abdullah knows Anwar’s only crime was to oppose Dr Mahathir, as Abdullah himself once did. The only difference was Abdullah had to spend years in the political wilderness while Anwar has spent this same amount of time in jail.

For all intents and purposes, Abdullah and Anwar both suffered at the hands of Dr Mahathir. Abdullah however bounced back as Prime Minister while Anwar cannot even walk let alone bounce. And, if left unattended any longer, Anwar may even suffer the fate of being paralysed for life. But it is still not too late for Abdullah to ensure this does not happen thus not only saving Anwar but his (Abdullah’s) own political career in the process.

Abdullah is currently away on five days leave. Let us hope the first thing Abdullah does when he reports back for duty is to send Anwar to hospital where he belongs.
